First Term Full of Success

I am beyond thrilled to see how many more people are enjoying our Whitehouse Village Park in the heart of our town.

During my first term on council we have made significant improvements to the recreation offered here, including creating pickleball courts and resurfacing our basketball courts. We built a new train-themed playground structure and added swings and musical flower instruments, and we put down a mulch playing surface and placed backed benches around the playground. We also purchased fitness equipment and erected new water fountains.

All of this was made possible by connecting directly with residents, looking at playground catalogs with folks in the park, forming a citizen ad hoc group, working with a local gym owner, whatever it took to bring about the things that you wanted to see there. When council was considering all of the options, I suggested we actually hold our meeting in the park so that we could visualize where it all would go. I am a boots-on-the-ground kind of representative.

You'll notice all kinds of improvements through the downtown area, such as streetscaping and flowers and a brand new Veterans Memorial Park. Little touches like decorative sign poles and stone pavers may not seem like much, but they help define the area and invite visitors and residents alike to spend time here.

Council also worked diligently on exploring options to bring safe, reliable, and cost-effective water to our residents. We made great strides meeting with other regional communities, hosting the gatherings here and learning everything we could about sourcing, transmission, and treatment. Whitehouse helped craft the historic regional contract with the city of Toledo that addresses significant capital improvement projects and a water quality that we can depend on through future generations. I toured the Collins Treatment Plant to see firsthand the challenges and opportunities there, and I am proud of our administration, public works director, and legal counsel for hammering out a decent deal for our water consumers and creating regional oversight for this vital utility.

Whitehouse joined with the city of Waterville and Waterville Township to form the Fallen Timbers Union Cemetery District, a joint body that now operates and maintains the five cemeteries within these communities, including Whitehouse Cemetery and Wakeman Cemetery. I serve as Whitehouse's trustee on this board, and it has been a privilege to pioneer the details of our first joint district and to tend to your dearly departed. We have set high goals of improvement, and with limited funds we've managed to make a difference already with things like tree care and well repair.

As promised, I spend a lot of time making sure that you are aware of what's going on in Whitehouse. I continue to administer the Whitehouse Ohio Community Discussion group on Facebook, as well as my council page. We've engaged in some important conversation here, and it's helped me share videos of things like my ride-along in the village garbage truck to the landfill and the schoolchildren planting saplings with the Whitehouse Tree Commission.

I am looking forward in my next term to bolstering this community engagement offline as well. I'd like to bring neighbors together in the park with gatherings such as a Potluck in the Pavilion. I'd like neighbors to gather in each other's homes and invite me and other council members there to discuss issues. I'd like to help you consider running for a council seat!

The legislative and civic work that council does on behalf of this community is something I consider a great duty and a special privilege. I encourage you to come to our meetings, held at 6:30 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month at village hall, 6925 Providence St., Whitehouse, Ohio. The committee of the whole meets at the same time and place on the third Tuesday of the month. Thank you very much for your support. We couldn't do any of this without it.

Serving the Local Community

My name is Rebecca Conklin Kleiboemer, and I am grateful to have been elected to Whitehouse Village Council in the Nov. 3, 2015, general election. Thank you for your support!

Whitehouse must strike that perfect balance between progressive development and careful preservation. We want to thrive and have an adventurous future, but we don't want to forget who we are or abandon the spirit of community that makes this area such a wonderful place to live.

This is a critical time for our village. We are only a few hundred more residents away from receiving a city designation from the U.S. Census. The needs of our community are reflecting changes in the economy, in education, and in society.

Yet we remain a close-knit community, a "small town" with long traditions and keen awareness of our history. Our neighbors are friendly and helpful, our businesses are personal, and our mix of town and country living is attracting more and more people as visitors and as residents.

We must work together. We must be wary of self-serving agendas, and we must seek out ways to maximize our public services for all the people who call Whitehouse home.

As a village council member, I will endeavor to:
  • Encourage public participation in the process
  • Engage in clear and open communication
  • Collaborate and compromise with colleagues
  • Work amicably with the administration
  • Promote policies that benefit local economic development
  • Support village employees fairly
  • Improve public spaces for community use

I am dedicated, professional, and hard-working. I've spent my career in the communications industry, and I can help address a common concern among residents that information about village business needs to be accessible and transparent. I patronize local businesses, serve in local organizations, and attend and help organize local events and activities. I love living in Whitehouse!
